Paint sprayers can paint large indoor areas quickly and efficiently. It is important to choose the right type of paint sprayer if you want the best results. This depends on how large of an area you plan on painting. It also depends on what type of paint you intend on using. Although some paint sprayers create more overspray than others, you can minimize your cleanup with proper preparation. Here, HCC Airless discusses the proper prep and use of a paint sprayer indoors.
Types of Paint Sprayers
The right type of paint sprayer can make any job easier. Inexpensive cup sprayers are the best option for smaller residential or commercial projects. While they usually provide an even paint finish, they have been known to “sputter” at times and cause runs when using certain paints. Air sprayers on the other hand give a smooth and even finish. One downside is that they can create more overspray than a typical cup sprayer.
Airless sprayers are generally fast, covering more surface area in less time than other types of paint sprayers. They can handle most types of paint without requiring paint thinner. These types of sprayers create less overspray, meaning more of your paint ends up on the wall instead of in the air. When it comes to indoor jobs, high-volume, low-pressure sprayers are an ideal choice as they produce the least amount of overspray.
Preparation
Using a paint sprayer indoors can create a paint mist that stays within the room. This paint eventually drops to the ground covering everything in its path. To avoid covering the entire room in paint mist, it’s highly recommended to cover whatever you don’t want paint on. HCC Airless recommends the following steps:
- Use plastic or drop cloths to cover the floor.
- Tape off light switches and baseboards.
- Cover ceiling fans with plastic bags, taping them off where they meet the ceiling.
- Use plastic sheets to cover the windows, taping around the edges.
- Cover doors and seal off doorways and room openings.
Protect Yourself
While it’s important to prepare the room for a job, it’s equally important to protect yourself. Each job comes with its own hazards so it’s important to consider these safety precautions:
- Wear old clothes, shoes and gloves when spraying paint indoors.
- Protect your hair with a hat or head covering.
- Protect your eyes with safety goggles.
- Wear a disposable paper face mask that covers your nose and mouth.
- Open a window in the room and remove the screen before the job begins.
- Place an old box fan in the window. This helps remove air from the room and blows it outside, limiting your exposure to paint mist.
Paint Sprayer Use
For proper use, read the paint sprayer manual carefully on how to fill up the sprayer, adjust the paint nozzle and how to thin the paint to the proper consistency. It’s a good idea to use the sprayer on a scrap piece of plywood or drywall first for practice. The distance between the surface and the sprayer varies with the type of sprayer and paint. Once you determine the correct distance, maintain that distance throughout the job. Spray the paint in smooth, even passes, overlapping each pass. This should allow you to work efficiently and create an amazing paint job.
